Every so often I make up a mix CD of my favorite songs at the moment; mostly new songs, but with some old songs sprinkled in for flavor. I thought it’d be a neat feature of this new blog to go through, song-by-song, and explain a little about why it appeals to me.
So far, I’ve revealed that my Big Three in contemporary music includes Timbaland and Damon Albarn. Today, I reveal the third: Pharrell Williams. He and his band N*E*R*D appear on the list with their single “She Wants to Move” (video).
Pharrell (he usually drops the last name) is known not quite so much for his performances as he is for his producing. Both on his own and as one-half of the production team The Neptunes, he’s been behind some of the most innovative acts in popular music for the past ten years. A list of the acts that just The Neptunes have produced reads like a who’s who list in pop and rap, from Britney to ODB, from BLACKstreet to Backstreet.
After producing for a few years, Pharrell began performing on tracks for other artists and on compilation CDs. After forming N*E*R*D (The Neptunes plus their friend Shay), he released a couple of solo albums. A cover of his big solo hit, “Frontin’”, will probably show up on a future compilation.
But back to “She Wants to Move”. It’s a very catchy song, very typical in style with much of The Neptunes’ work. I mean, how can you hate a song with the line, “Her ass is a spaceship I want to ride”? Although the song is now four years old, it recently appeared in a television ad for Hennessy cognac.
Next time: A one-hit wonder, but not their one hit.
