Every so often I make up a mix CD of my favorite songs at the moment; mostly new songs, but with some old songs sprinkled in for flavor. I thought it’d be a neat feature of this new blog to go through, song-by-song, and explain a little about why it appeals to me.
Next up is yet another song that can be attributed to Fuse’s show “The Dive”. (For the curious, the same can be said for seven of the eighteen other tracks on this volume.) The song is “Doctor Blind” by Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton from her album Knives Don’t Have Your Back. The name of the album is indicative of her strange, dark sense of humor, as also seen in the song’s video. The spooky instrumentation and lyrics of the song are complemented perfectly by the surrealistic story.
Haines is a musical nomad, which is popular these days. She has a solo career, releasing an EP follow-up to Knives a year later, but she’s also got a band called Metric. More than that, she’s also a member of the fantastic supergroup Broken Social Scene. I encourage you to read the Wikipedia write-up, but in a nutshell, a few musicians in Toronto formed the band for fun, but it soon became apparent that they had a good thing on their hands. Look for an appearance by another BSS artist on the winter mix.
Next time: the original Radiohead-lite.
