Every so often I make up a mix CD of my favorite songs at the moment; mostly new songs, but with some old songs sprinkled in for flavor. I thought it’d be a neat feature of this new blog to go through, song-by-song, and explain a little about why it appeals to me.
The next song on the list is “Black and White Town” by the British band Doves. I first saw the video on Fuse and fell in love with the band’s sound and style. It’s very accessible indie rock. I guess I can relate to the themes of a lot of their music: growing up and change. In no song are these themes more evident than in this one.
The band has been very popular in England, despite its relative anonymity on this side of the pond. Each of their last couple of albums have hit #1 on the charts there, while barely registering on the US charts. They did have one song covered by Jamie Cullum, which will show up on the next CD.
Next time: a really fun, silly track from another British band
