The Annual Christmas Night Movie: 2008

bedtime_storiesI told the story last year about my family’s annual Christmas tradition of going to the movies. This year, the choice was Bedtime Stories. I was not thrilled, but the rest of the gang (my brother, our cousin-in-law, and her two sons) enjoyed it.

Merry Christmas, everyone.

This year we did The Spirit. It was not nearly as bad as its 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes would lead you to believe. My mom and I both had a harder time with it at first since we’d seen Sin City and 300 — it was nothing like them. Once you realize it’s a comedy it’s pretty entertaining. As a survivor of Batman and Robin it took me longer to buy in but Ann, who went in with no preconceptions, enjoyed it earlier than we did. She claims the line “Come on, toilets are always funny!” should have tipped us off. Clearly she hasn’t learned anything from the mp3 of all the cold references by Mr. Freeze.

Anyhow, this makes the Christmas movies for us: Monsters Inc. (2001), Star Trek: Nemesis (2002), Big Fish (2003), The Life Aquatic (2004), King Kong (2005), The Prestige (2006), and The Spirit (2008). I think The Prestige is head-and-shoulders above the rest, but The Spirit was as enjoyable as Nemesis.
